Last updated February '25
Dear parents and carers,
The first half of the spring term always seems to go very quickly, and this year is no exception. We returned from the Christmas break to go straight into second year mock exams, but staff and students have also found time for lots of extra activities, from the ever-popular annual Battle of the Bands, to visiting speakers talking about werewolves in Literature. For more detail on what’s been happening, do have a look at the College’s Instagram.
We have recently celebrated some superb student achievements in science Olympiads, including a top gold award in the British Astro-Physics and Astronomy Olympiad, which College students entered for the first time this year.
Progression
I want to congratulate those students who have received offers to study at a huge range of universities, including Oxford, Cambridge, medical schools, conservatoires and many other higher education institutions in the UK and overseas. Our support for students in their next steps has continued this term, with a very well attended Employment and University fair on 6th February.
We know parents and carers are keen to know how they can help with progression decisions. As a reminder, lots of information can be found on the Careers and Progression section of College website, but we do also offer in person talks to parents and carers. There is an invitation to the first of these talks, for parents of first year students, below.
Summer Exam Season 2025
The majority of the A Level/BTEC/Applied General exams begin on Monday 1st May and all will end on Monday 23rd June. Please note that there is a final contingency date on the 25th June and students shouldn’t book holidays before that date, regardless of their individual exam dates. There are also practical exams and controlled assessments that take place before the 1st May and students will have been advised of these by their individual teachers.
Students have been issued with their statement of entry, detailing what exams they have been entered for during the exam period alongside the date of these exams. Finalised exam timetables (including seating/learning support arrangements) will be issued to students before the exam season starts. Results day is on Thursday 14th August and students access their result remotely via their Cedar accounts.
Supporting your young person through exams
The Mental Health Support Team (NHS educational mental health practitioners) will be running an exam stress workshop to equip parents with strategies to support their young person with exam anxiety. The session is online on Wednesday April 23rd at 7pm. To book a place please sign up using the link here
Revision and exam preparation advice evening
We are excited to invite all parents and carers to a special event on Thursday 6th March, 6.30-7.30. This evening aims to provide valuable guidance on how you can best support your young person in the lead up to and during exam periods.
During the session we will cover practical information on accessing exam timetables and other resources through CEDAR, effective revision strategies, and mindset techniques. We will also discuss how to create a conducive study environment and offer advice for the exam days themselves.
There will be an opportunity to ask general questions at the end of the session. For any specific concerns about your young person, please contact their Personal or Senior Tutor.
This online session may be particularly relevant to parents of second year students, but parents of first years are welcome too. No need to book: please use this Teams meeting link to join on the day.
With best wishes,
Jo Cadman
Information Regarding First Year Students
We would like to invite parents and carers of Year 1 students to the CAREERS AND PROGRESSION INFORMATION EVENING on HIGHER EDUCATION AND EMPLOYABILITY on Tuesday 4 March 2025 at 5:00pm and 6:30pm (whichever is more convenient to you, both sessions will cover the same information) in the Drama Studio. Click here to find out more
First year students have recently completed a short progress review and have met with their personal tutors to discuss their courses for next academic year. You can access attendance and target grades on Cedar. There will be full written reports in the summer term, following our internal assessments. Please see the annual cycle of academic events.
Information Regarding Second Year Students
Mock exams and assessments that second year students sat in January have now been marked, moderated and returned. Students have had feedback and guidance from their teachers, in lessons and individually, during the progress reviews. Reports will be published during the week after half-term and there will be a parents’ evening on Thursday 27th February. (Details were emailed to parents and students on 7th February.)
Quiz night fundraiser
In July of this year 20 A-level languages students will be travelling to the small town of Santa María de Fe in Paraguay to support the work of the Santa María Education Fund (UK registered charity). (The Santa Maria Education Fund, Paraguay (santamariadefe.org)). Our students will work with SMEF students, practising communication skills and teaching some English lessons. They will have the unique experience of practicing their Spanish language skills (or learn Spanish!) first hand and gain an understanding and appreciation of cultural idiosyncrasies. There will be culturally engaging trips to local historical sites, a local nature reserve, a local craft workshop as well as a cookery class, fishing, horseriding and learning to milk a cow! One of the many highlights of the trip will be a hop across the border into Argentina to see the world’s highest waterfalls: the Iguazú Falls. It will no doubt be a trip to remember!
As a group we aim to fundraise £10,000 for The Santa María Education Fund. Students each have a personal target of £250 and have already taken part in a fundraising activities such as a sponsored walk, and a Christmas Craft and Cake sale.
Want to get involved?! Come along and join our Paraguay Quiz Night Fundraiser on Saturday 15th March from 6.30pm-9.30pm. Doors open 6.00pm! Teams of 2 – 6 people. Entrance on the door, either cash or card, £5 per adult and £3 per student (IDs please!). Bring your own drinks and nibbles. Some refreshments will also be served.
