A Level Success

Students at The Sixth Form College, Colchester have achieved excellent results in their A level programmes in this summer’s exams.

Jo Cadman, the new college principal,  described the overall results achieved by students this year as excellent : “Our students’ achievements are once again very impressive, and I congratulate them on their levels of engagement, resilience and hard work. It’s important to remember that this group of students had a really difficult time when they were starting their GCSEs during the Covid period; they did so well. This has been a great year for the college and its students – they made a huge contribution to our ‘Outstanding’ OFSTED grade earlier this year, and it’s really pleasing to see their hard work rewarded with such fantastic results. It’s also a great send-off for outgoing college principal Ian MacNaughton – it’s lovely to see his 27 years at the helm capped by such success.”

She continued: “Huge numbers of students from The Sixth Form College have now obtained the qualifications they need to  proceed onto university degree courses, in subjects including medicine, veterinary science, dentistry, engineering, maths and computing, alongside a range of sciences, modern foreign languages, economics, architecture, law, English and history. Many have secured places at Oxford, Cambridge or other Russell Group universities, as well as medical schools, conservatoires and drama schools. Other students have secured excellent opportunities in degree apprenticeships or other employment with training routes.”

“Overall, the year group of nearly 1500 students, all of whom studied A level programmes at the College in 2022-24, achieved a subject pass rate of approximately 97%.  Especially pleasing have been the subject areas where everyone passed - 100% pass rates were achieved in 16 different subject areas.   Well over 90% of all the 18-year-old students at the College achieved 3 or more A level or Applied General Extended Certificate (A level equivalent) qualifications in their sixth form studies – a level of achievement which we believe once again will be very significantly above the national average level in sixth forms at school and colleges across England and Wales.  We are also confident that the 2024 cohort will again have achieved a strong ‘value-added’ level of achievement, when the overall level of results achieved by the end of their sixth form studies is compared to the GCSE results that they achieved at age 16."
